Directed by Nikita Mikhalkov
Set in 1930s Stalinist Russia this Russian-French masterpiece received huge critical acclaim upon its release and garnered the Best Foreign Language Film at the 67th Academy Awards. As well as writing and directing the film, Russian film-maker and actor Nikita Mikhalkov plays the lead role of Serguei. He has completed a sequel, which is due to be released at cinemas later this year. Respected hero of the Bolshevik Revolution Colonel Serguei Kotov lives an idyllic life in the Russian countryside with his wife Maroussia and daughter Nadia. One glorious summer’s day his serenity is interrupted by the arrival of the mysterious Dimitri, a former lover of Maroussia who had disappeared from her life 10 years earlier. Their new guest charms everyone with songs and stories, but Kotov soon suspects more sinister motives for his visit. Set against the growing threat of Stalin’s regime of terror this poignant film lingers in the memory long after viewing.
