The 63rd Cannes Film Festival - Official Selection

From 12th until 23rd May

The Brits will be happy to learn that this year, Kristin Scott-Thomas, has been given the very demanding role of Mistress of Ceremony. Tim Burton, well known for his quirky-themed films such as Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow or more recently, Alice in Wonderland, will be President of the Jury.

Julie Bertucelli ’s film, The Tree, with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marton Csokas and Aden Young, will be presented at the Closing Ceremony of the 63rd Festival de Cannes. Shot in Australia, the film is an adaptation of Judy Pascoe’s novel, "Our Father Who Art in the Tree".

The BFI is celebrating Agnès Varda, the queen of the New Wave, by showing some of her earlier films. Agnès Varda's key movie, Cleo from 5 to 7, has been reissued and will be shown along side 'la Pointe Courte' and 'Lions Love'.

70 years ago - General De Gaulle's Appeal of 18th June 1940

On 18th June 1940, 70 years ago,via the BBC airwaves, General de Gaulle delivered his memorable Appeal to French soldiers and engineers to join him in London where he had recently arrived and with him carry on fighting. Sadly, the BBC did not deem the speech important enough to be recorded, and very few actually heard it. Another speech, which was recorded and heard by more people, was given by de Gaulle four days later.
