Four-star performance at the Everyman Cinema

The Hampstead picture house where the clientele feel so at home that they forget what they came for...what was it? Ah yes! The film!

You could easily miss the sign against the khaki-green façade. Like so many places with reputations that precede them, the Everyman Cinema can get away with this kind of camouflage, relying on word of mouth recommendation rather than flashy neon signs. It is London's oldest cinema, dating from 1933, and one of the most talked about.
From the entrance, a staircase leads directly to the foyer. To the left, a dimly-lit salon adorned with red sofas and Art Deco-style lamps. A cosy, intimate atmosphere. An irresistible bar menu. Welcome to the Everyman cinema - the only picture house in London where you can be forgiven for forgetting the main purpose of your visit and where the exceptional care devoted to the comfort of clientele becomes the main feature.

Located on the ground floor, in the auditorium of an old theatre, Screen 1 is spacious with ample room between the seats to make yourself comfortable.
However, for a cinema experience that is truly divine, you have to be in the gods. In the former gallery of the theatre, cinema goers can now view a film comfortably ensconced in a large leather armchair, a glass of wine within arm's reach on a small mahogany table. It is like being at home, only better, because here you are not only king of the castle, but are treated like one.

David Broch, the owner, undoubtedly inspired by the idea of the 'home cinema' has turned the concept on its head. Rather than transporting the cinema experience into one's sitting room, why not bring the creature comforts of home to the cinema? A simple idea, but devilishly effective. The gallery seats (£15 including a glass of wine) are extremely popular, especially at weekends.
For a romantic evening go down two levels to the recently opened basement cinema (Screen 2) where the front rows are given over to 'love seats' - cinema seats for two - and where you can enjoy a bottle of Saint-Emilion (£29.50) in a bower of pink and orange velvet.
All that remains is to choose the film. The irony of the Everyman Cinema is that the choice of film matters less than the room in which it is shown. Rather, the dilemma is whether to go for the gallery seats in Screen 1 with the complimentary glass of wine or the love-seats in Screen two.
